Our True Stories

The name L'OCCITANE (pronounced LŌX-ĒĒ-TAHN) referred to Occitanie, the ancient province that once stretched across the south of France from East to West.  Occitanie was a welcoming, tolerant society where women and nature played leading roles.  L'OCCITANE literally means, in the old language of Oc, “The woman from Occitanie”.

Our story begins in Provence, in 1976, when L’OCCITANE was created by Olivier Baussan. Drawing inspirations from the lands, traditions and techniques of the Mediterranean, he developed skin care products that were effective, natural, authentic and appealing.

Today, L'OCCITANE continues to bring together nature and research, following the principles of aromatherapy and phytotherapy. We create formulas that are rich in natural active ingredients and essential oils that delight the senses and deliver proven benefits. Our roots will always be in Provence, where our products are imagined and produced to this very day.
