Red Rice

A unique variety from Provence: red rice

Red rice is whole grain rice that is excellent for the health. Its red coloring is the result of natural pigments contained in its pericarp. It is said that it was discovered at the foot of the Abbey of Montmajour, near Arles, in the Camargue, where red ears of rice grew in the traditional rice fields.

The Camargue is a land of wild beauty on the borders of Provence, set between the Rhône river delta and the Mediterranean Sea, offering a true mosaic of wonderfully rich environments and landscapes.

Rice growing represents a major ecological asset for the preservation of the Camargue ecosystem. Without the supply of fresh water from the Rhône River, necessary for rice cultivation, the Camargue would have become a salt desert, since seawater would have invaded the water tables.

Rice has been cultivated in the Camargue since the 14th century. Today, there are over 200 rice farms operating in the Camargue. The dynamic, high-quality nature of this production is ensured by the implementation of quality labeling and the development of organic farming.

L’OCCITANE has developed a complex with patented effectiveness, made with organic red rice from the Camargue, to meet the specific needs of combination and oily skin.
